Remembering "Ragtime: The Musical"

January 25–February 17, 2019

In early 2019, the Eagle Theatre in Hammonton, New Jersey, presented Ragtime: The Musical, captivating audiences with its rich storytelling and powerful performances. The production, which ran from January 25 to February 17, 2019, masterfully intertwined the narratives of three distinct groups in early 20th-century America: African Americans in Harlem, Eastern European immigrants, and the upper-class residents of New Rochelle.

Under the direction of Ted Wioncek III, the Eagle Theatre's rendition of Ragtime delved into themes of hope, injustice, and the pursuit of the American Dream. The production was noted for its thoughtful portrayal of societal issues that remain relevant today, such as racism, anti-Semitism, and the roles of women.

The cast delivered compelling performances, bringing depth to characters like Coalhouse Walker Jr., portrayed by Ezekiel Andrew, whose journey highlighted the struggles against racial injustice. The creative team's efforts in set design, choreography, and musical direction contributed to a production that was both visually and emotionally engaging.

Reflecting on this production, it's evident that the Eagle Theatre's Ragtime not only entertained but also prompted audiences to reflect on historical and contemporary social issues.
